The point-of-sale business has been good to us. It’s a field that rewards hard work, problem-solving, and showing up when other people would rather not. For decades, the VAR (Value Added Reseller) community has been the backbone of the POS industry, but many of those operators are nearing retirement and far too few new people are stepping in. The need to build the next generation of resellers has never been clearer.
Vets to VARs gives transitioning servicemembers a genuine pathway into a business that values discipline, drive, and field work — strengths already honed in service. If you’re looking for an opportunity to build something of your own, support merchants in your territory, and create long-term stability for your family, this is a place to do it. We’ll equip you with the tools and training. You bring the commitment. The success that follows is yours.
The Prerequisites
Honorably Discharged from the Military
Pretty self-explanatory. Our ideal pay grades at exit would be E-5 to E-7 for Enlisted Soldiers and O3-04 for Officers. We will require a copy of your DD-214 for consideration.
Space for a Home Office
You will need a room where you can store equipment and a table to stage point-of-sale systems on. Doesn’t have to be fancy – nobody will be seeing it. All sales are done in the field.
Current Means of Support
This takes several months to get going and longer than that before it’ll pay all your bills. You need the financial means or a support network that can allow you to work at point-of-sale and payments 40+ hours a week.
A Source of Capital
Depending on how fast you sell right out of the gate, that can vary. A fair guestimate would be $50K, most of it for POS equipment that will be out of pocket until you are made whole. We can discuss specific numbers if we get to that point.
An Outgoing Personality
You will need to pull door handles, introduce yourself and create relationships. This is the key to your success (in addition to decent accounting skills).
Solid Computer Skills
It’s what we sell, install and support, so you will need to have novice or better computer skills and the ability to learn wired and wireless networking. We can teach you everything, but you need to know your way around a computer before you get here.
The Drive to be the Best
It sounds simple enough, but in my lifetime, I’ve seen more people who have trouble with success than failure. I’m not looking for someone who wants to sell a few systems and create a lifestyle business. I only want people with the drive to be the biggest and best reseller in their territory. If you’re willing to settle for second or third place, you’re not who I’m looking for.
The Willingness to Work Evenings and Weekends
When a system is down, nobody is making money. Our key differentiator is service. It’s the reason people buy from us and not a website with offshore support. The evening and weekend thing isn’t forever – once you get to making enough money you can hire someone, split the on call, and as you continue to grow work your way out of it. But when push comes to shove, it’s your name and reputation, so be prepared to roll up your sleeves if you need to.
That’s about it. This is on a first come, first serve basis. We wish we could help everyone, but unfortunately, we don’t have that kind of bandwidth. The hope is that we train a group of you guys, send you out and make you successful, and then you help with the next group and so on. If everybody pulls together, we can help a lot more people.
